What is SLN?
The SUNY Learning Network is a consortium of State University of New York campuses who participate in the SUNY Learning Network Online Education program. You may take courses using online courseware, or pursue degree programs at any SUNY Learning Network partner campus. To see a list of campuses that are part of the SUNY Learning Network, please see the list of SLN Campuses. Any Degree Program you complete will be granted by the institution at which you are registered.
Find a Course
With SLN, you find a course you want, register at the campus offering that course, and become part of a Campus and Statewide community of learners.
How it works
The SUNY Learning Network is a combination of technology (either SLN Classic software, or ANGEL Learning Software), and educators. SLN Instructors develop an online curriculum that supports and enables learning in a web-based environment. Based on the course requirements and your preference, you might study on your own, interact with the instructor or other students, work in groups, participate in class discussions, and submit assignments-all online. Your courses may involve you in other Web-based resources, online simulations, offline activities, or a combination of all of these. Some courses are fully online, others may require on-campus participation. Everycourse is different, and you'll need to work with your home campus to complete registration and find out what type of instruction that campus or course is offering.
Time commitments with online courses
Like any college-level course, SLN courses involve a time commitment. Each course is different, depending upon upon the structure of the course itself. For a typical online course, plan on three to four hours of coursework per week per credit hour. For instance, a three-credit course would typically involve 9 to 12 hours of work each week.
The benefits of online study
From all that work, however, you gain substantial benefits. Online learning encourages feedback from all students, not just those who might raise their hands in a traditional classroom. The variety of options accommodate a wide range of learning styles. And because SUNY professors create these courses-in conjunction with SLN Educators and elearning professionals - you get the benefit of our award winning program - no matter what campus you're with.
Online Resources
Every campus supports it's online students with trained faculty, HelpDesk services, and a commitment to excellence in online teaching and learning. With SLN you'll have:
- Access to SLN HelpDesk services. If you need help navigating your course, this is the place to go. Available 24 hours, 7 days a week via email, or by telephone during operating hours.
- A place online to share Most online courses feature chat-based forums, discussion area, and ways to communicate with your online classmates and your instructor
- Online documentation and support - developed by SLN support staff for Educators and Students
Technical Requirements
Online courses with SLN require a computer, internet access, and webbrowsers compatible with the software your campus is using. In addition, campuses may have additional requirements for students, such as secure email accounts or campus-based email.
