Technical Requirements

To take courses through the SLN, your computer system should meet at least the following minimum requirements:

  • Processor: Pentium II (PC) or G3 (Macintosh)
  • Operating system: Windows 98 (PC) or System 8 (Macintosh)
  • RAM: 64 MB
  • Modem: 56K
  • Internet access
  • Web browser: Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher (5.2 for Mac users) or Netscape 6.2 or higher, with cookies allowed from suny.edu domain (see specifications for your browser below).
  • Valid, working email address that accepts email from SLN
  • Word processing software that allows you to save files in Microsoft Word 6.0 or Rich Text Format (RTF)

How to Clear Your Web Browser’s Cache [top]

Microsoft Windows 2000/XP/Vista

Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0.x

1. Click "Tools" --> "Internet Options"

2. Click "Delete Cookies" --> Click "OK"

3. Click "Delete Files" --> place a checkmark in "Delete all offline content" --> Click "OK"

4. Restart the browser

Windows Internet Explorer 7.0.x

1. Click "Tools" --> "Internet Options"

2. On the "General" tab, within the "Browsing History" section, click "Delete"

3. Click the "Delete" buttons and then "Yes" for the following:

A. Temporary Internet Files

B. Cookies

C. History

D. Form data

4. Click "Close"

5. Restart the browser

Mozilla Firefox 2.x

1. Click "Tools" --> "Clear Private Data"

2. Place checkmarks in the following areas:

A. Browsing History

B. Saved Form and Search History

C. Cache

D. Cookies

E. Authenticated Sessions

3. Click "Clear Private Data Now"

Mozilla Firefox 1.5.x

1. Click "Tools" --> "Clear Private Data"

2. Place checkmarks in the following areas:

A. History

B. Saved Forms

C. Cookies

D. Cache

E. Authenticated Sessions

3. Click "Clear Private Data Now"

Netscape 8.x

1. Click "Tools" --> "Options"

2. Click the "Privacy" section

3. Click "Clear" and then "OK" next to the following areas:

A. Page History

B. Search History

C. Datacard Manager

D. Cookies

E. Cache

4. Click "Close"Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0.x

5. Click "Tools" --> "Internet Options"

6. Click "Delete Cookies" --> Click "OK"

7. Click "Delete Files" --> place a checkmark in "Delete all offline content" --> Click "OK"

8. Restart the browser

Opera 9.x

1. Click "Tools" --> "Delete Private Data"

2. Click "Details"

3. Place checkmarks in all of the areas except the bottom four.

4. Click "Delete"

Apple MacOSX 10.x

Apple Safari

1. Click "Safari" --> "Empty Cache" --> "Empty"

2. Click "Safari" --> "Preferences"

3. Click "Security"

4. Click "Show Cookies"

5. Click "Remove All" --> "Remove All"

6. Click "Done"

7. Close out of the "Preferences" window

Mozilla Firefox 2.0.x

1. Click "Tools" --> "Clear Private Data"

2. Place checkmarks in the following areas:

A. Browsing History

B. Saved Form and Search History

C. Cache

D. Cookies

E. Authenticated Sessions

3. Click "Clear Private Data Now"

Mozilla Firefox 1.5.x

Same procedure as for Mozilla Firefox 2.0.x

Mozilla Camino 1.x

1. Click "Camino" --> "Empty Cache" --> "Empty"

2. Click "Camino" --> "Preferences"

3. Click "Privacy"

4. Click "Show Cookies"

5. Click the gear icon on the lower left of the window

6. Click "Remove All..."

7. Click "Remove All"

8. Click "Done"

9. Close out of the "Preferences" window

Opera 9.x

1. Click "Tools" --> "Delete private data..."

2. Click "Details"

3. Place checkmarks in all of the areas except the bottom four

4. Click "Delete"

Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.x

1. Click "Explorer" --> "Preferences"

2. Click "Advanced"

3. In the History section, click "Clear History" --> "OK"

4. In the Cache section, click "Empty Now"

5. Click "Cookies"

6. Select desired cookies on the list and click "Delete"

7. Click "OK"

8. Restart the browser

 

How to Create a Bookmark or Favorite in your Web Browser [top]

Netscape calls the process Bookmark; Internet Explorer calls it Favorites.

Internet Explorer 5.x and 6.x:

While viewing the page you would like to bookmark:

  1. Click on “Favorites” menu choice.
  2. Choose “Add to Favorites...”.
  3. In the “Add Favorite” window, click “OK”.
  4. The bookmark will now appear in the main list under the “Favorites” menu choice.

 

Netscape Navigator 6.2:

While viewing the page you would like to bookmark:

  1. Click on the “Bookmarks” menu choice.
  2. Choose “Add Bookmark”.
  3. A bookmark to the page will now appear in the list when you click “Bookmarks”.

 

Netscape Navigator 7.x:

While viewing the page you would like to bookmark:

  1. Click on the “Bookmarks” menu choice.
  2. Choose “Bookmark This Page”.
  3. A bookmark to the page will now appear in the list when you click “Bookmarks”.

How to Enable Scripting [top]

To confirm that you have scripting enabled in your browser, complete the Test Your System diagnostic test. If not enabled, follow the steps below to enable your browser.

 

How to enable Active Scripting in Internet Explorer:

Windows - Internet Explorer 5.5 - 6.x

1. Select Tools, Internet Options.

2. Click Security tab.

3. Select the Internet icon and then click the “Custom Level” button.

4. Scroll to Scripting section.

5. For Active Scripting, select radio button to “Enable”.

6. Answer “Yes” to question “Are you sure you want to change security settings for this zone?”.

7. Then click OK to close windows.

8. Close and re-open Internet Explorer.

 

Macintosh O/S 9.x - Internet Explorer 5.1x

1. Select Edit – Preferences.

2. Expand the Web Browser category on the left and select “Web Content”.

3. Under the “Active Content” heading, put a checkmark on “Enable scripting”.

4. Click OK to close the Preferences window.

5. Close and re-open Internet Explorer.

 

MAC O/S - 10.x Internet Explorer 5.23

1. Select Explorer, Preferences.

2. Expand the “Web Content” category on the left.

3. Under the “Active Content” heading. put a checkmark on “Enable scripting”.

4. Click OK to close the Preferences window.

5. Close and re-open Internet Explorer.

 

How to enable JavaScript in Netscape:

Windows - Netscape 6.x and 7.x:

1. Select Edit, Preferences.

2. Expand the Advanced Category on the left and select “Scripts & Plugins”.

3. Under the heading “Enable JavaScript for” put a checkmark next to “Navigator”.

4. Click OK to close the Preferences window.

5. Close and re-open Netscape.

 

Macintosh O/S 9.x - Netscape 7.x:

1. Select Edit, Preferences.

1. Select Safari, Preferences.

2. Click on the Security icon.

3. Next to the “Web Content” heading, put a checkmark on “Enable JavaScript”.

4. Close the Preferences window.

5. Close and re-open Safari.

How to Deselect Smart Quotes Settings [top]

Below are directions to deselect the Smart Quotes settings in several different word processing programs. You must turn off these settings BEFORE creating the document. We suggest you then complete a practice assignment submission in Module 4 of the Student Orientation so you know the problem has been resolved. If you are using a word processor that is not listed below, consult your owner’s manual or the Help screen of the application for more information.

 

Windows Programs

WordXP, Word2000, Word97

1. Pull down the TOOLS menu.
2. Select AutoCorrect.
3. On the “AutoFormat As You Type” tab, deselect the option “Straight quotes” with “smart quotes”.
4. On the “AutoFormat” tab, deselect the option “Straight quotes” with “smart quotes”.
5. Click “OK” to save the changes.

or

1. Pull down the FORMAT menu.
2. Select AutoFormat and then select Options.
3. On the “AutoFormat” tab, deselect the option “Straight quotes” with “smart quotes”.
4. On the “AutoFormat As You Type” tab, deselect the option “Straight quotes” with “smart quotes”.
5. Click “OK” to save the changes and click “OK” to close the AutoFormat window.

Word for Windows(prior to Word97)
1. Pull down the FORMAT menu.
2. Select AUTO-FORMAT.
3. Select OPTIONS.
4. Deselect REPLACE STRAIGHT QUOTES WITH SMART QUOTES. (Make sure the X does not appear).

Microsoft Works 6.0 and Works 2002
1. Go to Tools and select AutoCorrect.
2. Select Options and deselect “Straight Quotes with Smart Quotes”.

Microsoft Works (prior to 6.0)
1. Click Tools, then Options.
2. Go to the Editing tab.
3. Uncheck the box next to “Use smart quotes” (or may say “Use smart copy and paste”).
4. Click OK.

Word Perfect
1. Choose Tools (at top of menu) when in Word Perfect.
2. Select QuickCorrect. You should see the necessary options, but you are using version 7, you will need to select “options.”
3. Deselect (uncheck boxes) in 2 places for “turn on single (and double) quotes”.
4. Select OK and CLOSE as necessary to escape.

Mac Programs
Word 98and Word 2001
1. Click Format, then Autoformat.
2. Click the Options button.
3. You will notice 4 tabs, click on the Autoformat tab.
4. Deselect “replace straight quotes with smart quotes”.
5. Go to the Autoformat as you type tab.
6. Uncheck the box next to “replace straight quotes with smart quotes”.
7. Click OK.

AppleWorks
1. Click Edit, then Preferences, then General.
2. Remove check next to Smart Quotes (under Options).
3. Click Make Default.
4. Click OK.

How to Deselect Long Dash Settings [top]

Below are directions to deselect the long dash settings in Microsoft Word. You must turn off these settings BEFORE creating the document. 1. Pull down the Tools menu.

4. Deselect Replace as you type “Symbol characters (- -) with symbols (--)”.
5. Select the AutoFormat tab.
6. Deselect Replace “Symbol characters (- -) with symbols (--)”.
7. Click OK.

Macintosh attachments

 

Word98, Word2001, and WordX users

1. Open your saved file in Word.
2. Select File, Save As.
3. Next to “Save file as type” select “Word 6.0/95”
4. Use a very simple filename that does not contain any spaces. Then type “.doc” at the end of your filename and click Save. This will save your file in Word for Windows format and create a second copy of your document. We recommend you save this new file in a different folder than your original file to make the new file easier to find.
5. Return to the online assignment form and complete the appropriate steps to attach your new file.


AppleWorks users

1. Open your saved file in AppleWorks.
2. Select File, Save As.
3. Next to “File Format” select “Text”.
4. Use a very simple filename that does not contain any spaces. Type “.txt” at the end of your filename and click Save.

a. This will save your file in Text Only format and create a second copy of your document. You do not need to save this new file in a different folder than your original file as this new file will have a different extension.

5. Return to the online assignment form and complete the appropriate steps to attach your new file.


Macintosh Word Processors that offer Rich Text Format:

1. Open your saved file.
2. Select File, Save As.
3. Next to “Save file as type” select “RTF” or “Rich Text File”.
4. Use a very simple filename that does not contain any spaces. Then type “.rtf” to the end of your filename and click Save. This will save your file in the RTF format and create a second copy of your document. We recommend you save this new file in a different folder than your original file to make the new file easier to find.
5. Return to the online assignment form and complete the appropriate steps to attach your new file.

 

Microsoft® Viewers [top]

 

Viewer for Word 97/2000 on PCs using Windows 95/98 or Windows NT
Microsoft® Word 97/2000 users will be able to share assignments created within Word with students who do not have access to Word 97/2000. With the Microsoft® Word Viewer 97/2000, you will be able to read Word documents posted in your course, or sent to you via email, even if you do not have the Microsoft® Word application software. This viewer will allow you to view and print documents created in the Word file format, as well as zoom, outline, or view page layout, headers/footers, footnotes, and annotations.

Excel 97 Spreadsheet File Viewer
The Microsoft® Excel Viewer will allow you to view/read other students’ assignments created in Excel, even if you do not have this application software. Microsoft® Excel Viewer allows users to view and print Microsoft Excel for Windows® and Microsoft® Excel for the Macintosh® spreadsheet files. The Microsoft® Excel Viewer will allow you to view page layout, copy and control cell sizes, and access the zoom and AutoFilter features. The Microsoft® Excel Viewer supports OLE DocObject as well as the ability to view any Excel file.
