Welcome to the SUNY Learning Network Faculty Developer Gateway!
How do college faculty transition course materials from time/place bound classroom to asynchronous online courses? Through work with faculty in creating online courses, the award-winning SUNY Learning Network instructional design team has identified faculty strengths, needs, and constraints, and developed models and tools to facilitate faculty development and online course design processes.
Since 1994, our unique approach to faculty development and course design has supported more than 3000 SUNY faculty in their transition from the traditional to the online classroom. Sequential steps in the process developed by the SUNY Learning Network (SLN) have been used to support faculty to develop and deliver unique, Internet-based courses spanning all disciplines from 40+ different institutions in the State University of New York system. Our award winning comprehensive approach includes an online faculty resource and information gateway, an online conference for all course developers, the opportunity to audit live asynchronous courses, a series of workshops for new faculty, instructional design sessions for returning faculty looking to improve their courses, a course developer's handbook, a course template, a faculty helpdesk, online mechanisms for faculty evaluation of SLN services, course evaluation and student satisfaction, and an assigned instructional design partner. Tips, suggestions, and best practices for converting classroom courses to the online web environment are shared in our growing virtual community of online faculty as we continuously evolve to improve our services and build opportunities for networking between new and experienced faculty.
This is an overview of our 4-stage SLN Faculty Development Process:
1. | Reflection - (and get connected and online)
|
2. | Conceptualize your course -
- Audit a variety of "live" web course.
|
3. | Develop your course - seven step process:
- Includes a series of workshops, a course templates, a course developer's handbook, and an assigned instructional design partner.
- Returning faculty resources and services include 1 workshop and online resources to help them create new courses or that target evaluation and revision of courses they will reteach.
|
4. | Pilot your course - then evaluate and revise. |
