Technical Participation Requirements in the ANGEL system for Students and Faculty:
Student and faculty technical requirements in SUNY's preferred course management system, ANGEL (current version 7.1).

ANGEL is tested with and fully supports the following browsers:

Windows OS: Internet Explorer, Firefox and Mozilla.
    Macintosh OS: Firefox and Mozilla.

SLN will be migrating to ANGEL 7.3 for the fall 2008 term, and it requires "Internet Explorer 7." Internet Explorer 6 will not be supported.

Technical requirements in the SLN classic system (until June 2009)

Technical Participation Requirements for Faculty:

The minimum requirements for faculty using the Lotus Notes R6 client include a Pentium II or Power PC computer with 128MB RAM and having a CD ROM drive, adequate hard disk space to accommodate software and databases associated with their SLN course management (336+ MB) and Internet access.

    • Windows 98/ NT4(SP6a)
    • Windows 2000(SP2)/XP
    • Macintosh OS9 or OSX
    • Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 and higher as your web browser
Faculty can work from multiple computer locations and should have basic familiarity with Windows or Mac operating systems, word processing, and using the Internet/WWW. Some courses may have additional computer requirements so the computer may need a sound card, more RAM, larger disk space, and additional software applications.

Technical Participation Requirements for Students:
To participate, registered SLN students must use Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 and higher or Netscape 6.2 and higher as their web browser. Student access to the SLN web site can be either through a dialup Internet service provider (56K baud), campus network provided in a computer lab, or cable modem service.

Though students do not have to be experts, they must have basic computer knowledge such as word processing skills and some experience using the Internet and a web browser. To participate, students need at least:
    • Access to a computer having the minimum equivalent of a Pentium II processor, 64 MB RAM, and 56K baud modem.
    • Windows 98 and higher or Macintosh G3 System with Mac OS8 or higher
    • An Internet connection to the web
    • A graphical web browser:
Windows users: Netscape 6.2 and higher, or Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 and higher.

Macintosh users: Internet Explorer 5.1 and higher, or Netscape 6.2 and higher.
Students should not use a beta/preview version or different type of web browser software. The web browser must allow at least session cookies from the suny.edu domain. It's recommended that students install the most current version of the IE or Netscape web browser that is available for their computer's operating system.
    • An Internet email account that accepts mail from the SUNY Learning Network and does not "block" Internet mail messages from suny.edu domain.
    • Word processing software installed on the computer for creating documents. It must have the capability to save files in the Microsoft Word 6.0 or RTF file formats.
    • Successful completion of the SLN "Test Your System"
    • Optional: A printer allows a student to print out documents if necessary.
Some courses may have additional computer requirements. Students will need to check the prerequisites to determine if additional hardware, software, or browser plugins are necessary for participation in courses.
