Fall 2008 SLN faculty development guidelines
Overview of our 4-stage SLN Faculty Development Process
1. Explore the SLN Developer Gateway of online resources (http://SLN.suny.edu/developer) Participate in the New Faculty Forum. (Under construction and not available this term.)
2. Conceptualize your course and review the courses for observation. (Under construction and not available this term.)
3. Develop your course through our seven-step process using our ANGEL course shells, manual, and instructional design partner.
4. Pilot your course; evaluate and revise as needed.
Below are rough guidelines for the timely completion of your Fall 2008 online course. Faculty developing fully online courses for Fall 2008 must complete all 6 new faculty trainings. Be sure to check with your assigned MID to determine the best training options for you if you are developing a blended course. As you plan your course development, check with your assigned campus MID for term start dates, and any campus-specific training plans, events, and information, as well as any institutional policies specific to your campus.
STAGE 1:
March 18 - NEW faculty
· Access the SLN Developer Gateway for information on available services and resources.
· Participate in the New Faculty Forum: http://sln.suny.edu/conference. (The online conference activities generally run from March 15, 2008 through September 15, 2008, however this term the conference is under construction and not available.)
March 18 - NEW faculty
· Observe model courses. (Under construction and not available this term.)
March 31 - April 30, 2008 - NEW faculty from the previous faculty development cycle term just completing delivery of their first course in the Spring 2008 term should attend their final workshop #4 Evaluating, Revising, and Improving your Online Course.
STAGE 3:
April 15 - May 2- NEW Faculty
· Attend workshop: Introduction to ANGEL and Navigation - recommended for faculty new to ANGEL prior to SLN workshop #1.
· Attend workshops #1 Introduction to Online Learning and #2 Presenting Content in your Online Course
Meet your assigned campus-based instructional design partner
Set up your ANGEL course shell according to what type of course you plan to teach
Distribute account passwords
Distribute training materials
April - June: MIGRATING Faculty (April 25 or June 4) Attend SLN'S Content Conversion Migration Webinar (or campus training).
Early June (before workshop #3)- NEW faculty complete a rough draft of your entire course module structure in your ANGEL course shell.
June - July: MIGRATING Faculty (June 25 or July 11) Attend SLN'S Gradebook Basics Migration Webinar (or campus training).
Summer 2008 - Faculty
· Check with you assigned campus-based instructional designer for training and migration opportunities, events, activities.
June 9 - June 18 - NEW faculty
Attend workshops #3 Integrating Interaction in your Online Course and #4 Authentic Online Assessment
You should have a functioning outline of your entire course and a draft of your course information documents completed. All documents should be drafted and appropriately set up in your ANGEL course shell.
June/July (Summer schedule) - Keep the summer vacations months in mind as you plan your work. During this time you should refine and complete all learning activities and all course documents.
August 1 - your course should be complete and turned over to your MID for a formal course review.
August: MIGRATING Faculty (August 1 or August 13) Attend SLN'S Gradebook Basics Migration Webinar (or campus training).
August
Review your course with your MID.
· Make necessary revisions to your course.
NOTE: Courses reviews and revisions should be completed by August 21, 2008.
August 4 -13 - NEW faculty
· Attend workshop #5: Teaching and Managing your Online Course in ANGEL 7.3
STAGE 4:
September- January - NEW Faculty
· Teach your course.
November/December 2008 - NEW faculty completing delivery of first course in Fall 2008.
· Attend final workshop #6 Review and Revise your Online Course (Dates TBA).
NOTE: Check with your campus for the date that your students will be able to access your online course. In addition to SLN’s faculty development activities, please also be sure to check with your campus-based MID for any campus-provided training opportunities, resources, or events.
